Biennial, sparsely arachnoid, c. 60 cm. Stem sulcate, narrowly winged with triangular, shortly spinulose lobes, sparsely branched above. Cauline leaves oblong, lobed to c. 1/3, lobes broadly ovate-triangular and shortly spinulose . Capitula solitary on long ±unwinged peduncles. Involucre 20-23 x 30-40 mm ; phyllaries regularly imbricate, minutely puberulent and sparsely arachnoid when young; median lanceolate-acuminate, 20-23 x 3 mm, firm, erecto-patent, ± falcate and reddish above, carinate in distal ¾ and gradually attenuate into a subulate 2-3 mm spine; inner c. 24 mm, linear-lanceolate and slender-tipped. Corolla zygomorphic, purple, 22-27 mm. Achenes 3-4 mm; pappus 12-15 mm. Fl. 7. Alt. c 1700 m.
