Slender annual, 20-40 cm, sparsely branched. Stem continuously winged below, with short denticulate shortly spinulose lobes. Cauline leaves pinnatifid, lateral lobes 3-5-paired, triangular and broadly lobulate, shortly spinulose-tipped and –margined, amplexicaul and decurrent, septate-hairy above, canescent-tomentose below. Peduncles long and slender, 5-15 cm, often with reduced lanceolate leaves below, unarmed and tomentose above, 1-headed. Involucre broadly oblong , 14-17 mm long, glabrous or subflococse; phyllaries regularly imbricate, outer and median ovate to lanceolate , ±adpressed, abruptly narrowed into a linear prolongation that is 1-nerved,greenish, pale-margined, setulose, and shortly acuminate-spinose; inner phyllaries subscarious, about as long as longest median ones. Corollas actinomorphic, purplish-pink, longer than involucre, lobes erect, 4-5 mm. Achenes 5 mm; pappus c. 14 mm. Fl. 5-6. Rocky limestone hills, 100-760 m.
