Perennial, stem 23-31 cm, erect, simple, nearly glabrous and conspicuously ivory-white. Leaves very firm with prominent veins, petiole and mid-nerve white; basal and lower nearly orbicular to oval or broadly lanceolate, petiolate, median and upper lanceolate, decurrent. Involucre 25-35 x 23-40 mm. Appendages only partly concealing basal part of phyllaries, firm, brown, triangular or mostly rectangular in lower part, upper part with 4-6 pairs of cilia directed towards apex and a central spinule 4-7 mm, sometimes appendage only dentate. Flowers yellow. Achenes 6 mm; pappus 10-14 mm . Fl. 7-8. Steppe, dry stony slopes, 1640-2400 m.
