Perennial, up to 50 cm, profusely branched from near base, capitula numerous, often 2-3 together. Leaves scabrous, slightly arachnoid to tomentose; lower and median pinnatipartite with ultimate segments 1-3 mm broad, upper leaves simple. Involucre 8-10 x 3-4 mm, oblong. Appendages large, spreading, straw-coloured , with 9-11 cilia 1.5-2 mm on each side, terminal spinule as long as cilia or slightly longer. Flowers rose-purple, marginal ones not radiant, hermaphrodite flowers 4-6. Achenes 3.5-4 mm, pappus absent. Fl. 6-7. Dry hills, fields and roadsides. 50-1300 m.
