Perennial herb with a thickened rootstock and a basal leaf rosette. Stem erect, striate, floccose tomentose to villous, sparsely glandular-punctate, 150-165 cm tall and 10-13 mm in diameter at base, usually branched in the upper part, bearing 10-15 capitula; branches 3-50 cm long. All leaves tomentose and glandular-punctate; basal leaves 6-22x1.0-3.5 cm, 1-2 pinnatisect, ultimate segments 15-20 mm wide, margins entire to dentate; median leaves similar to the basal leaves; upper leaves linear, occasionaly with 1 lateral lobe at base. Capitula 1 or rarely 2 at the end of branches, globose or nearly cylindrical, 30-40x17-30 mm. Phyllaries imbricate, puberulous, densely glandular-punctate and blackish_brown in upper parts; outer phyllaries broadly ovate, 6-10x5-7 mm; median phyllaries ovate-oblong, 14-16x6-8 mm, inner phyllaries linear-lanceolate, 20-22x4-7 mm; appendage of phyllaries not decurrent to the base, straw coloured, with 10-12 cilia on each side, 2-3 mmlong, ending in a slender 1-2   mm long spinule. Florets dark purple, ca 25 mm long; corolla tube glabrous, with 4.0x5.5 mm long linear lobes. Achenes 4.0-5.5x2-3 mm, oblong, covered with densely adpressed whitish hairs; pappus biseriate, inner series 2-3 mm long, outer series 8-10 mm long, scabrous, whitish. Flowering in Jun-Jul.
