Shortly rhizomatous perennial herb. Stems erect or decumbent, 7-30 cm. Leaves oblanceolate, up to 7 x 1 cm, acute, green or greyish-green above, white beneath, with prominent midrib, evenly distributed along stems and decreasing regularly in size above. Capitula solitary or in groups of 3 in axils of upper leaves, forming a spike-like inflorescence. Involucre 3-4 mm broad; outer phyllaries ovate, 3 x 2 mm, with pale or brown margins; intermediate and inner ones lanceolate, 4,5 x 0,5-1 mm, with pale brown scarious apices. Female flowers c. 50; hermaphrodite flowers c. 3; corollas 3,5-4 mm. Achenes 1,25 mm, minutely puberulous with short obtuse hairs. Pappus white, 4 mm; hairs connate at the base, persistent. Fl. 7-8. Coniferous forests, alpine pastures, screes, 1000-2700 m.
