Erect perennial with woody rhizomatous rootstock. Stems 30-75 cm, simple and 1-capitulate or branched above and subcorymbose, subglabrous or sparsely pilose. Leaves lanceolate or ovate, 2-15 x 0.5-3.25 cm, acute or acuminate at apex, rounded-subauriculate and sessile at base, glabrous or sparsely pubescent on both surfaces, margin sharply serrate or denticulate, usually finely ciliate. Capitula 1-6 in corymbs. Involucre 1-2.5 cm broad; phyllaries 3-seriate, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, 6-10 x 0.75-1 mm, sparsely and minutely glandular. Ray flowers 20-50, ligules mauve or lavender-blue, 13-17 x 1.25-3 mm. Disc flowers 5-8 mm. Achenes oblanceolate, 4 mm, sparsely pubescent and glandular. Pappus 2-seriate, brownish-white, 6-7 mm, with a ring of 1-2 mm outer hairs. Fl. 6-8. On rocky slopes and meadows in open forest or Rhododendron scrub, 1700-2440 m.
