Perennial herb, sparsely floccose or not, 15 – 45 cm tall. Stems branched; base of stem with dense fi brous leaf remains. Basal leaves 7 – 25 x 0.2 – 0.6 cm, linear, with flat margin; lower cauline leaves 5 – 16 x 0.4 – 1.2 cm, lanceolate or rarely linear, with flat margin; upper cauline leaves 1.5 – 3.5 x 0.5 – 2.0 cm, broadly lanceolate, acuminate, with flat margin. Peduncles not or slightly thickened below capitula. Involucre sparsely floccose or not at base. Phyllaries approximately 8, 18 – 20 x 3.5 – 4.5 mm in flower and 20 – 30 _ 4 – 6 mm in fruit, lanceolate, equal to or shorter than flowers. Ligules yellow, 9 – 17 mm long. Achenes 16 – 26 mm long, abruptly narrowed into the beak, with five longitudinal rows of scales fused into prominent wings; beak scaly throughout, distinctly sulcate and 8 – 14 mm long, generally shorter than achene body and clavate at apex. Pappus 15 – 25 mm long, pale yellowish-brown, annulus sparsely hairy. Flowering in July and fruiting in July – August
