Sturdy erect scabrous annual, 15-80 cm. Stems unarmed. Leaves long-petiolate, 4-12 cm, cuneate-ovate, obscurely 3- or 5-lobed, irregularly crenate. Capitula clustered in leafaxils or borne in axillary and terminal inflorescences. Fruiting involucre 12-30 x 8-20 mm , very variable in colour and form. Fl. &fr. 7-10.
