Roughly hirsute perennial or biennial, stems 1-2, 12-40 cm, suberect, internodes short. Basal leaves obovate or narrowly obovate, lamina 25-85 x 3-15 mm; cauline narrow, lower obovate, upper oblong or ovate, all often a distinctive fresh green colour. Inflorescences terminal, bifurcate, also rarely axillary. Pedicels 1,5-6 mm in flower, 1,5-13 mm in fruit, at least as long as calyx. Corolla violet or purple, 3-6 mm. Scales trapeziform, apex incurving. Nutlets suborbicular, 8-12,5 x 6,5-10 mm, disc with scattered dense long, or sparse short glochids, wing 2,0-3,3 mm broad, dorsal surface always with sparse glochids, margin cristate, teeth large and broad. Style 1,3-4,5 mm in fruit. Fl. 6-7. Rocky limestone and igneous slopes, banks, fallow fields, 1250-2350 m.
