Grey-villous biennial. Stems 15-60 cm, erect. Early basal leaves 25-30 x 7-8 mm, ovate, later-developing ones linear-lanceolate, lamina 40-90 x 8-10 mm, petiole to 80 mm, cauline subacute, linear, lower shortly petiolate. Inflorescence corymbose, cymes numerous. Calyx 7-12 mm. Corolla deep red or reddish-violet, 10-16 mm, tube subequalling or slightly longer than limb. Scales 3-5 mm, linear, with two lateral gibbous appendages halfway up, apex long-acuminate above appendages. Anthers 2,5-4,5 mm. Style 13-16 mm. Nutlets 10-11 mm diam., disc echinulate, margin of wing entire and sparsely tuberculate or glochidiate-denticulate. Fl. 5-6. Rocky slopes, river valleys, 900-1900 m.
