Perennial herb. Stems ascending to erect. Rosette leaves variable, usually obovate, petiolate or sessile, dentate with rather obtuse teeth. Stem leaves usually oblong, auriculate; all densely to sparsely stellate-canescent. Petals white, frequently drying yellowish, 12-16 mm. Siliquae strongly compressed, somewhat strangulate between the seeds, strict to spreading. A complex species which can be further divided.
1. Lower leaves tapering, without distinct petioles, usually with more than 4 teeth; pedicels straight, erect or spreading subsp. alpina : Balkans, Caucasia, W. Syria, Iran.
