Perennial, erect, 30-60 cm, shortly pubescent, rarely glabrous. Stems branched ± from middle, 1-2 mm diam., with leaf-rosette and few cauline leaves. Rosette-leaves and lower cauline-Ieaves similar, lanceolate, linear-Ianceolate, rarely ovate, acute, 4-5 x 0·7-1 cm, narrowed into 4-5 cm petiole, irregularly dentate, undulate, rarely entire, papillose or shortly pubescent. Flowers ± single in lax spicate to paniculate inflorescence. Pedicels 4-10 mm, bent upward after anthesis. Calyx lobes lanceolate, 2-3 x 0·5 mm, erect. Corolla lobes 9-10 x 1·5 mm. Stigmas 3. Capsule ovoid-oblong, 5-7 x 3-4 mm, often constricted below apex, opening by 3 ± apical pores. Seeds ovoid-ellipsoid, 1·2-1·5 x 1 mm, brown, shiny. 2n = 24. Fl. 6-8. Open Junperus excelsa forest, steppe, rocky slopes, 800-2700 m.
