Small caespitose perennial. Rhizome 10-15 cm, much branched with sterile leaf-rosettes. Stem leafy only in lower part, ascending to 15 cm, glabrous. Cauline leaves linear-Ianceolate, acute, lamina to 40 x 3 mm, entire, narrowed into 10-40 mm petiole. Inflorescence few-flowered, spicate or rarely reduced-paniculate. Flowers single on 2-6 mm pedicels. Calyx-lobes linear, 3 x 0·3-0·6mm, spreading, glabrous or ciliate at margin. Corolla-lobes 8-10 x 0·5-1·8 mm, glabrous. Stigmas 3. Capsule conical or cylindrical, 4-5 mm, opening by 3 ± apical pores. Seeds ellipsoid, ± flattened, 0·8-2 x 0·8-1 mm, reddish-brown, shiny. Fl. 7-8. Rocky vulcanic slopes, 2400-3200 m.
