Hispid biennial. Stem erect-ascending, to 50-70 cm, striate, leafy. Basal and lower cauline leaves ovate, obovate or oblong, obtuse, 4-11 x 3-5 cm, crenate to 2-crenate, attenuate into often winged petiole to 10 cm; median oblong, upper lanceolate, sessile, shortly decurrent on stem, acuminate. Flowers solitary or in clusters of 2-3, sessile, axillary in a ± dense spike or a stiff panicle. Calyx lobes lanceolate, 7-10x2-3mm, acute, ± dentate, ± patent, ½ x corolla, twice as long as obconical ovary, strigose. Corolla broadly campanulate, to 15 x 30 mm, divided to ½ , glabrous, bright to deep blue. Style filiform. Stigmas 3, long. Capsule obconical, 4-5 x 4 mm, hispid, opening by 3 ± median pores. Seeds small, 0·6 x 0·2 mm, oblong, brown, shiny. 2n = 26. Fl. 6-9. Streamsides, moist places, 270-1220m.
