Biennial with thick fusiform root. Stems solitary or few, 20-30 cm, ascending-erect, thick, simple or. branched from base, sparingly setulose, especially near inflorescence. Leaves adpressed-hairy, slightly crenate, basal broadly ovate to oblong, obtuse, with rounded or attenuate base, with long petiole; lower cauline oblong, obtuse, lamina decurrent along petiole; middle cauline few, sessile, semi-amplexicaul, broadly oblong, linear, ± constricted at middle. Flowers sessile, in compact, large, terminal capitate inflorescence, enveloped by oblong obtuse to attenuate, slightly dentate, bracts with ± cordate base; after flowering these form a broadly infundibular, membranous involucre, pale green below. Calyx lobes long-lanceolate, 12-15 mm, erect, long ciliate at margin, 2 or 3 x obconical, glabrous ovary. Calyx appendages obsolete, recurved. Corolla cylindrical or cylindrical-infundibular, c. 20 mm, divided to 1/4 into oblong lobes, glabrous, mauve. Capsule obovoid, splitting from base upwards. Seeds oblong, ± marginate, tuberculate, 3-4 x 2 mm, olive brown. FI. 5-6. Rocky slopes, 700-2200 m.
