Perennial with subglabrous or sparsely pilose stems up to 2 m. Lower leaves 15-35 cm long, lyrate to pinnatisect, segments elliptic, serrate, often decurrent, sparsely pilose; upper leaves pinnatisect to pinnate, terminal segment longer than lateral ones. Capitula globose, 2-4 cm diam., subradiant; flowers pale yellow or cream. Involucral bracts triangular-ovate, obtuse to suddenly acuminate; receptacular bracts ovate, suddenly acuminate; both blackish, pilose and pubescent. Involucel sparsely pilose, with c. 8 subequal teeth. Fl. 6-8. Rocky slopes, steppe, meadows, 1120-2450 m.
