Stout biennial with spiny stems up to 2 m. Cauline leaves connate at base, deeply lobed to pinnatifid, margin bristly-spinose, spiny on underside of leaf, at least on margin. Capitula ovoid to cylindrical, 4-6 x 3-4 cm. Involucral bracts unequal, 3-6 cm, lanceolate, spreading to ascending, rarely exceeding capitula. Receptacular bracts with long apical spine, exceeding flowers; those at top of capitulum usually very much longer than others and forming a 'tuft'. Flowers white or pale pink. FI. 7-9. Roadsides, banks, fields, 50-1800 m.
Europe northwards to France, Germany and N. Ukraine; Crimea, C. Asia, N. Iraq.
