Erect biennial up to 1-2 m, with sparsely prickly stems. Basal leaves in a rosette; cauline leaves shortly petiolate, dentate or entire, ovate-elliptic, simple or with a pair of basal leaflets, glabrous. Capitula 1,5-2 cm diam., globose. Involucral bracts 7-10 mm, narrowly triangular, spine-tipped, hispid. Receptacular bracts ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, hispid. Flowers white or cream. Fl. 8-9. Forest clearings, roadsides, 1200-1500 m.
