Erect annual growing to 50 cm, with short glandular and long eglandular hairs. Lower leaves oblong, crenate-dentate or pinnatisect with a large ovate-Ianceolate, dentate or crenate terminal lobe, and small, Iinear-lanceolate lateral lobes; upper leaves pinnatifid. Involucral bracts 10-16 mm, lanceolate, ± equal to flowers, sometimes longer. Capitula radiant; corolla mauve, external flowers with broad, acute petals. Involucel 4-6 mm, glandular-hairy on ribs, with teeth at apex but no corona. Calyx 9-11 mm, with 10-15 setae. Fl. 5-8. Stony slopes, roadsides, s.l.-1700 m.
