Glabrous to pubescent or pilose biennial or perennial, 20-60 cm tall. Lower leaves petiolate, oblong or lyrate, entire, dentate or pinnatisect; upper leaves sessile, pinnatisect with linear segments, becoming entire, linear towards top of stem. Involucral bracts 8-10, lanceolate to cuspidate, shorter than flowers. Capitula 1.5-2 cm diam., radiant; flowers lilac-pink to bluish-mauve, outer flowers with entire petals. Fruiting head ovoid-oblong. Involucel 1.5-2 mm, 8-grooved, with hairy ribs; corona 1.5-2 mm, margin inrolled; diaphragm conical. Calyx long-stipitate; setae 3-7 mm. FI. 5-8. Roadsides, dry fields, dunes, s.l.-1200 m.
