Perennial , 12-45 cm. Sterile shoots absent at flowering. Lowest long-shoot leaves 30-50 x 1,5 mm, linear, glandular-pubescent, apex obtuse or acute. Stems branched above, flowers usually in pairs, pedicels 5-20 mm. Bracteoles 2, ½ -3/4 calyx length, green, ovate, narrowed gradually into a green, cuspidate apex. Calyx19-22 x 3-4 mm, narrowed above, teeth 7-10 mm, linear, long-acuminate to aristate. Petal limb red, usually white-spotted, 6-8 mm, barbulate, dentate. Fl. 5-9. Open places, s.l.- 1400m.
Balkans. This species is usually described as annual, but in cultivation has proved to be perennial; the perennating shoots are produced late in the season, so that flowering specimens appear to be annual.
