Prostrate, ascending or erect annual herbs, often many-stemmed, 5-25 cm. Basal leaves narrowly spathulate to linear. Upper leaves linear to ovate, sessile. Inflorescence 3-16-flowered, the flowers maturing ± simultaneously. Pedicels erect first, soon becoming sharply deflexed at base. Petals  0,7-3,0 x sepals, the claw usually glabrous. Stamens 5 or 10. Capsules 4-9 mm.
A very variable species, here divided into 3 varieties. The matter is discussed more fully in the paper referred to above. Only specimens seen are cited.
1. Petals 2-3 x sepals; stamens 10; lower stems and leaves usually with glandular hairs; petals pink .............................var. tenerrimum
1. Petals 0,7-1·5 x sepals; stamens 5 or 10; lower leaves with or without glandular hairs; petals white, sometimes with a pink flush
   2. Capsules 6,5-9 mm, stamens 10; plant ± ascending ........var.glutinosum
   2. Capsules 4-6 mm; stamens 5; plant erect ........................var. umbellatum
The range of the species is from W. Europe to W. Pakistan and further E.
