Much branched ascending annual herb, 15-20 cm. Stems glandular-hairy. Inflorescence irregularly cymose, the flowers shortly pedicellate or subsessile, borne singly along the branches or in fascicles of 2-4 at branch apices. Calyx campanulate, 8-10 x 2 mm, with 5 prominent ridges, the intervening membrane opaque, dark, and separating somewhat from the ridges in fruit; glandular hairs and long, spreading, simple hairs present, the whole calyx tinged with purple. Petals very narrow, 10-12 x 0,5-1 mm, deeply bifid, the lobes entire. Capsules c.7 mm. Seeds c. 6. Fl. 8. Schist slopes, 1200 m.
Endemic. The calyx indumentum distinguishes V. hispida from V. quadridentata which it otherwise most resembles.
