Small shrub up to 50 cm tall. Leaves ovate-elliptic, with stellate hairs above and below. Petioles free, not flattened. Cymes 1-3-flowered, lateral. Flowers long-pedicelled, white, 2-4 cm across. Sepals manifestly cordate at base, outer 3 enclosing inner 2. Style very short or absent. Capsule adpressed pubescent. Fl. 3-5. Calcareous macchie and garigue on coastal hills, up to at least 500 m.
Throughout the Mediterranean and extending into N. Iran, the Caucasus, W. Europe.
