Stems strongly twisting and climbing to 2 m or more. Leaves ± sagittate or cordate; sinus V-shaped, acute. Bracteoles rarely more than 15 mm broad, not overlapping, flat or keeled at base, acute at apex. Corolla 32-52 mm, white. Stamens 17-24 mm; anthers 4-6 mm. Fl. 5-9. Edges of rivers and lakes , or climbing in hedges or waste places, s.l-800 m.
The species is widespread in temperate parts of the N. & S. hemispheres, and divisible into 8 subspecies
