Erect perennial, 10-40 cm, glabrous or glandular-papillose above; sterile shoots at first bulbiferous, whitish and subterranean, later rising to the surface and forming green rosettes from which the flowering shoots arise. Aerial leaves at base of stem ovate-oblong, 10-40 x 8-15 mm, obscurely crenate to entire, obtuse, sessile, becoming smaller further up the stems and acute. Flowers 5-merous, sessile; sepals 5-6 mm, acute; petals pink or red, 8-10 mm; stamens 10; follicles glabrous though minutely papillose, spreading. Fl. 7-8. Rocky places, under Juniperus, etc., s.l.-2160 m.
