Perennial. Rhizomes long-creeping, covered with brown scale leaves. Stems 3-40 cm, trigonous above, subterete to terete below. Basal sheaths brown, bladeless or shortly bladed; upper green with narrowly linear, ± flat , obtuse, glabrous or scabridulous-margined blades 5-17 cm x 1.5-3.3 mm. Inflorescence of 3-17 spikelets, 1.5-3.5 cm. Spikelets bracteate, 6-12 -flowered, ovoid-lanceolate, 5-10 mm. Glumes ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 3-6 x 1.8-3 mm, 2-5-veined, golden- to reddish-brown, acute to acuminate, lowermost sterile. Perianth bristles 5, 3-4 mm, 2 x length of nut, retrorsely scabridulous. Anthers 2.3-3.6 mm . Style 3.2-3.5 mm, base glabrous, pale-coloured, stigmas 0.7 mm. Nut ellipsoid, plano-convex, 1.5-2.5 x 0.6-1 mm, blackish-brown. Fl. 5-8. Always in wet places - cliffs, marshy valleys, beside streams, wet gullies, lake edge, wet [lushes, dried up water courses, water meadows, at edge of saline marsh, growing with Juncus sparganiifolius and Eleocharis quinqueflora, 1000-3200 m.
