Stout perennial with lanate roots. Rhizome long with broad phyllodic scales. Stem 10-80 cm, obtusely trigonous. Leaves sub-basal, blades thick, recurved, with involute margins. Bracts 3-6, dilated at base, longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence a dense, sessile, hemispherical to globose head, 1.5-3 cm diam. Rachilla not winged. Spikelets 8-15 x 3-4 mm, with dense, spirally arranged flowers. Glumes 5-8 x 2.5-4 mm, broadly lanceolate to ovate, brownish to purplish, margin and apex hyaline, acuminate with 1-3 mm mucro. Stamens 3. Nut c. 2/5 x glumes, trigonous, oblong-elliptic, greyish-brown. Fl. 6-8. Sandy sea shores, dunes and slacks, s.l.-5 m.
