Caespitose annual. Stems 2-25 cm. Leaves shorter to somewhat longer than stems, 1-4 mm broad. Bracts 2-4, longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence a simple or compound umbel. Rays 3-7, very short or to 3 cm. Spikelets 2-6 x 1-2 mm, patent, linear or oblong-tapering. Glumes 1-1.3 x 0.7-0.8 mm, ovate, acute to obtuse, greenish to blackish-brown, obtuse or acute, with greenish keel. Stamens 2. Nut 1 mm, 3/4-1 x glumes, ellipsoid, trigonous, 0.5-0.7 mm, pale brown. Fl. 7-10. Damp places, ditches, rivulets etc., s.l.-1800 m.
