Caespitose annual, rarely perennant. Leaves shorter or longer than stems, 1-4 mm broad, acute. Bracts 3-5, overtopping inflorescence. Inflorescence a ± simple umbel of 1-6 dense heads, rays often of unequal length. Spikelets 6-15 x 2-2.5 mm, linear to oblong-lanceolate, with 10-24 flowers, patent. Rachilla very narrowly winged. Glumes distichous, 2-2.5 x 1.5 mm, elliptic to ovate, acute, coloured shades of brown or greyish-brown, with greenish fascia and very narrow hyaline margin. Stamens 2. Nut obovoid-trigonous, 1.2 mm, constricted at base, very shortly apiculate , greyish-black. Fl. 7-9. Marshes, riverbanks, stream beds, canals, rice fields, s.l.-1650 m. 
C. Europe, S.W. Asia eastwards to W. Pakistan.
