Caespitose annual. Stems 3-15 cm, Leaves dilated at base, shorter or longer than stems. Bracts 5-7, dilated at base, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence a dense, sessile, hemispherical to globose head, 0.5-1 cm. Spikelets 2-5 x 1.5-2 mm, ovate-oblong, distichous, with 8-20 patent flowers. Rachilla not winged. Glumes 1.2-2.5 x 0.5-0.6 mm, in 2 or 3 rows, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, hyaline or yellowish-white with greenish midrib, tapering into a recurved mucro to 0.5 mm. Stamens 1-3. Nut 1/3-1/2 x glumes, oblong-ellipsoid, trigonous, c. 0.75 mm, light brown. Fl. 7-9. River and stream banks, calcareous ground, 100-900 m.
