Distinguished from C.longus by its slender rhizomes bearing sparse narrow scales and sometimes tubers; leaves borne only near base of 10-60 cm stems; primary rays less than 10 cm; nut 2/5 x glumes, obovate, trigonous, blackish. Fl. 7-9. River beds, damp fields, cultivated ground, roadsides etc., s.l.-660 m.
