Tufted perennial, forming tussocks. Stems 14-45 cm, terete below, trigonous above. Basal leaves c. 1 mm broad, trigonous. Cauline leaves usually 2, reduced to tubular, ± inflated sheaths. Spikelets solitary, terminal, 2.5-3.5 mm, oblong in flower, broadly obovate to subglobose in fruit. Glumes ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, lower ones empty, 10-20, grey, 8 x 3 mm, reflexed after anthesis; upper glurnes fertile, many, 6-7.5 mm. Perianth bristles numerous, c. 2 cm, silky, apex entire . Anthers 2.5-3 mm. Nut 2-3 x 1.8 mm, light brown. Fl. 5-6. Boggy alpine pastures and lake sides, to at least 1750 m.
