Densely caespitose perennial. Stems erect, 40-87 cm x 2-3 mm, triquetrous to trigonous, sheaths bladeless. Lower bract 3-8.5 cm, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence of 2-20 sessile spikelets in compact hemispherical head. Spikelets ovoid to oblong-ovoid, 4-12 mm. Glumes broadly obovate, 3-4 x 2-2.5 mm, mucronate, glabrous, reddish with green mid-vein. Perianth bristles 6, retrorsely scabrid, equalling or slightly longer than nut. Stigmas 3, minutely papillose. Nut broadly obovoid, trigonous, 1.5-2.5 x 2 mm, blackish-brown, transversely rugulose at maturity. Fl. 7-10. Ricefields, wet places, nr s.l-1000 m.
Temperate Eurasia, Egypt, Cameroons; introduced in Australia.
