Shortly rhizomatous densely tufted perennial. Stems 15-130 cm, terete, rigid, sulcate, green. Leaf sheaths pale brown, narrowing abruptly into 10-65 cm canaliculate leaves with margins scabrid towards apex. Involucral bracts 1-2, lower to 65 cm. Inflorescence of 1 sessile and several lateral stalked globose 4-17 mm diam. heads. Spikelets 30-40 per head, each spikelet ovoid, 2.5-3.5 mm. Glumes obovate to elliptic, 2.5-4 x 0.5-1.8 mm, pale greenish-yellow to dark brown, ciliate, mid-vein shortly excurrent. Anthers 1-1.5 mm. Nut ellipsoid-trigonous, 0.6-1.2 mm, smooth, greyish-brown. Fl. 4-8. Marshes, wet meadows, streamsides, river valleys and flats, volcanic ash by crater lake, serpentine or siliceous rock, coastal dune slacks, edge of saline canals, s.l.-3050 m,
