Rhizome short, decumbent. Fronds up to 30 cm., lamina lanceolate, 2-pinnate, pinnules ovate, ½ -pinnatifid; petiole as long as lamina, slender, naked except for a few thin lanceolate scales at base. Fronds dying completely in winter. Sori as in generic description. Spores ripe 6-9. Usually in crevices of basic rocks, in damp woods and shady places, amongst shady rocks and in caves on mountains, s.l.-3000 m.
Very widespread in N. and S. hemispheres.
