Small tree or bush to 10m with dense silvery scales, especially on undersides of leaves. Leaves Iinear-lanceolate, 30-60 x 3-7 mm. Male flowers in small catkins, with 2 stamens and 2 obtuse perianth lobes, 3-4 mm; female flowers in axillary racemes. Fruit yellowish-orange, elliptic, 6-9 x 3-7 mm; seed elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, sometimes flattened. Fl. 3-5. River banks, shores, steep rocky slopes, sandy or rocky soils, s.l.-3000 m.
