Very robust tomentose perennial to 1 m, flowering stems biennial, cicatricose below. Cauline leaves linear to narrowly elliptic-oblanceolate, shortly petiolate to subsessile, 4-11 x 0.3-1.3 cm, acute or obtuse, tapered to base, entire, dark grey-green above, paler beneath. Ray-leaves obovateoblanceolate. Raylet-leaf 'cups' 1.5-3 cm across. Rays 10-45to 3 times dichotomous; axillary rays 13-40, often verticillate. Glands short, medium or long-horned, yellowish. Fruit strongly trilobate, 5-7 mm diam., smooth, evenly to densely pubescent. Seeds ovoid-squarish, 2.5-3 mm, smooth, pale grey, caruncle conical. Fl. 1-5. Open Pinus brutia forest, Quercus macrolepis forest, macchie, rocky limestone slopes and screes, shady places, ruins, roadsides, s.l.-1000 m.
Balkans. E. Medit. element. Subsp. characias, extending from Portugal & Morocco to Jugoslavia & Cyrenaica, is predominantly W. Mediterranean in distribution.
