Sparingly pilose or densely villous perennial herb to 80 cm, usually with numerous stems arising from rootstock. Cauline and ray-leaves oblong-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 2-5 x 0.3-1.5 cm, acute, subacute or obtuse, cordate-auriculate, minutely serrulate. Raylet-leaves ovate-rhombic, 7-20 x 7-18 mm, subcordate. Rays 5, at first trichotomous, then dichotomous; axillary rays absent or several. Fruit 3.5-4 mm diam., evenly verrucose, pilose. Seeds ovoid, 2 mm, dark brown, tuberculate-rugulose; caruncle reniform. Fl. 4-9. River-banks, marshy fields, salt marshes, sandy beaches, s.l.-1400 m.
