Robust, caespitose, glabrous perennial to 1 m, with a creeping rhizome. Stems thick, with numerous axillary leafy shoots in upper part. Cauline leaves elliptic-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 2-5 x 0.3-1.3 cm, those of axillary shoots narrower than those on main stem, acute, subacute or obtuse, minutely to obscurely serrulate. Ray- and raylet-leaves ovate or obovate to suborbcular, 0.5-2 x 0.3-1.5 cm, yellowish. Rays 5-7, trichotomous then once or twice dichotomous; axillary rays 4-10. Fruit trilobate, 4-6 mm diam., verrucose-tuberculate. Seeds ovoid, 3-4 mm, smooth, pinkish-brown. Fl. 3-6. Riverside, lakeside and coastal marshes and swamps, nr s.l.-1160 m.
