Prostrate fleshy glaucous glabrous annual, usually 4-branched from base; branches to 40 cm, often purplish. Leaves falcate-oblong, 5-15 x 2.5-10 mm, obtuse or emarginate, obliquely truncate at base, ± entire. Stipules filiform, 1-1.5 mm. Glands reddish-brown, with narrow white or pinkish appendages. Fruit 4-5 mm diam., often purplish. Seeds ovoid-pyriform, 2.5-3 mm, smooth, pale grey. Fl. 6-9. Sandy seashores, shingle beaches, and shores of inland salt lakes, etc., s.l. .
Coasts of W. Europe, Mediterranean, Black and S. Caspian seas; ?N. Persian Gulf. Rarely inland, e.g, the McNeill specimen cited above. Medit. element.
