Shrub 1-3 m, with a strong odour. Leaflets elliptic, pubescent. Flowers 2-12, in short racemes on spur shoots. Corolla 20-25 mm, brassy yellow, the standard black-blotched. Legume 7-20 x 1-2 cm, strongly compressed. Fl. 3-5. Rocky slopes and deciduous woodland, s.l.-1000 m.
S. Europe, Cyprus, W. Syria, N. Iraq, N. Africa, Arabia. Medit. element. Being unpalatable to stock, this species can survive in overgrazed areas where other trees and shrubs have been largely eliminated. The flowers are much visited by bees.
