Erect, glabrous to sparsely pubescent perennial, 40-150 cm. Leaflets 4-10 paired, 15-50 x 4-15 mm, elliptic to lanceolate; stipules sagittate. Inflorescence 30-50-flowered, 7-10 cm, elongating in fruit. Flowers white to lilac or purple. Calyx teeth c. 3 mm, linear. Corolla 10-15 mm. Legume terete, 20-50 x 2-3 mm, beaked, 2-10-seeded. Fl. 6-9. Scrub, woodland, wet places, etc., s.I.-1200 m.
