Annual with ascending or decumbent stems, 5-35 cm. Leaves with 5-7 pairs of narrow-elliptic or oblong leaflets, glabrous above, pilose below; stipules free, scarious. Peduncles longer than leaves. Inflorescence subcapitate, 3-8-flowered. Calyx 5-6 mm with subequal teeth up to twice as long as tube. Corolla pale pink or pinkish orange; standard and keel subequal, 8-10 mm, wings c. 7 mm. Ovary pubescent. Lomentum with 2-3 orbicular pubescent segments, covered with hard hooked spines. Fl. 3-5. Rocky slopes near sea level, 0-100 m.
South Europe, Cyprus, W. Syria, N. Egypt. Medit. element. The only annual species of the genus in Turkey, H. spinosissimum is also easily recognised by the hard hooked spines on the fruit and the free stipules.
