Annual, 25-50 cm, usually ascending, densely covered with glandular and simple hairs. Leaflets 10-25 x 5-12 mm, obovate, ovate or oblanceolate, apiculate, with serrate margin, glabrous above; stipules most often with six pointed teeth. Peduncle 1-3-flowered, shorter than or nearly as long as petiole. Flowers 6-9 mm. Calyx teeth as long as tube. Corolla less than 2 x calyx. Young fruit protruding sideways from calyx. Fruit cup-shaped, 7-15 mm high, spineless, with glandular hairs; coils 5-7, pergamentaceous, concave, each coil enclosing the next. Fl. 3-5. On heavy soils, mostly in cultivated or fallow fields, nr. s.l.
