Decumbent to ascending perennial, 20-50 cm. Stipules linear; free portion lanceolate, often foliaceous. Leaflets 1,5-5,0 cm, elliptic to oblong, rarely ovate. Inflorescence globose to ovoid, 1,5-2,5 cm diam., sessile or shortly peduncled. Calyx 10--nerved; tube closed by a 2-lipped callosity when in fruit, glabrous or hairy; teeth unequal, subulate-setaceous, acute. Corolla purple, rarely white, 15-18 mm, c. 2 x as long as the calyx. Fl. 5-8. Forests, scrub, pastures, etc., nr. s.l.-2000 m.

Throughout most of Europe , Caucasia, N. Iran. Very polymorphic.
