Tree to 30 m; young shoots angled, dark reddish-brown, ±glabrous; buds to 6 mm, glabrous or slightly pubescent. Leaves lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, rarely oblong-ovate, to c. 27 x 7 cm, ±regularly and sharply serrate with to 25 acute teeth on each side, apex acute or acuminate, base cuneate to rounded, glabrous above, densely adpressed-stellate-tomentose or glabrescent below; petiole 0.8-2.5 cm. Cupule spherical, to 6 em diam. in fruit, pale yellowish-brown, covered with long sparsely pubescent spines. Nuts 1.5-3.5 em. Fl. 6-7, fro 9-10. In well drained, deciduous and mixed forests , usually calcifuge, 30-1500 m.
