Tree to 40 m. Bark light grey, smooth. Pseudo-terminal buds to 2.2 cm. Young shoots reddish-brown, pubescent. Leaves broadly elliptic to obovate or obovate-oblong, rarely ovate, acute or shortly acuminate, 6.5-15.5 x 3.5-8 cm, with 8-13 pairs of veins, broadly cuneate or rounded at base, margin entire or slightly undulate, glabrous on both surfaces except for midrib and primary veins of lower surface, which are long silky-pilose; petiole pubescent, 0.6-1.2 cm; stipules caducous, to 3.5 mm. Involucral scales of two kinds, upper ones subulate, lower ones leaf-like, spathulate bracts, 5-15 x 2-4 mm; peduncles pubescent, 2.5-3.5 em. Nuts 1.2-2.2 cm. Fl. 5. Deciduous and mixed forests , 700-1300 m.
