Robust herbs to 100 cm. Stems several, simple, of 14-20 internodes; flowers in upper leaf axils, forming a ± elongated head. Leaves ovate-Ianceolate to lanceolate, narrower and more crowded above, usually 5-nerved, green. Flowers usually 5-merous, sessile. Calyx 12-20 mm, divided to c. ½; lobes narrow, acute and spreading. Corolla mid to deep blue, rarely white, 30-50 mm, divided to c. 1/6; lobes triangular, acute; subsidiary lobes shorter and ± irregular. Capsule ellipsoid, shortly stipitate. Fl. 8-9. Grassy places and clearings in woodland, 300-2000 m.
